Accessorizing can be a bit overwhelming at times and seems we find ourselves in a fashion rut. These questions can help drum up some inspiration and serve as a guide for choosing the right accessories.
1. What does it feel like outside?
The seasons play a big factor into what we wear! Start with what it feels like outside and then explore your options from there. Alternatively, you can start with an accessory and consider how it can work for the season. If you want to wear a scarf in the summer, opt for a silk scarf to tie around your neck or hair. If you want to wear a tank top in the winter, think about what you can layer it with to stay warm.
2. Where are you headed?
Obviously what you wear to the office is going to be different than a night out with your friends and your accessories should follow the same rules! Also think about what will be functional and fashionable. For example, if you’re standing at a festival all day, sub the bulky tote for a cute fanny pack instead.
A quick scroll through Instagram or Pinterest will immediately guide you through the latest trends. Even checking out what’s popular on your favorite store’s home page can serve up some fashion inspo in a pinch. Playing into trends and putting your own twist on them is a great way to switch up your everyday look. Just like the bike shorts trend isn’t slowing down anytime soon!
4. What accessory do I gravitate towards?
Sometimes starting with what hits closest to home is the best way to delve into an accessorizing journey. If you already wear a specific kind of jewelry each day, what can you do to switch it up? Maybe dredge up that turquoise necklace you’ve been saving for a special occasion and go for it! Sometimes starting with a single accessory makes for a great start for piecing together an outfit.
Are you wearing all black or neutral colors? Then maybe a pop of color is just what will send this fit over the top. Is your top solid or patterned? Think about what will compliment each look. What will add a twist that puts your own signature spin on an old classic like a white tee and jeans or a little black dress?
6. What size are the other elements of my outfit?
If you’re wearing a baggy pair of cargo pants, balance it out with a small handbag or clutch. If you’re wearing skinny jeans and a well-fitted blouse, opt for a chunky pair of platforms or a good-sized tote bag.
7. What do you want to do for makeup?
Not everyone wears makeup and that’s totally okay, but a lot of people forget that makeup can serve as a powerful accessory and change up the vibe of any look. Going for a bold lip? Match it to your shoes or bag! Have you worn these clothes together before? Jazz it up with a funky new eye color for a fresh take on a look you already love!
8. What accessory do you hope to be the spotlight of your outfit?
Is there a certain accessory or even article of clothing that you want to stand out against the others? Start with one piece and then plan the rest of your outfit around it. If you want to wear a bold red pair of heels, go for more subdued neutral colors for the rest of your outfit.
And remember, you can never have too many!
